Paterson School District has joined more than one-thousand other school districts around the country in applying for a Race to the Top grant, a program aimed to reform k-12 education in United States.

Paterson Public Schools will be competing against other districts for a piece of the 400 million dollar pie.

Previously the same program allowed states to compete against each other for funds, but this new round where districts are competing against each other, is aimed at lower income areas like the Silk City; one of the application requirement includes: 40 percent of students must qualify for free lunch.

20 or so winners will be announced by December 31st, 2012.

“We want to support local efforts that will close the achievement gap and transform the learning environment by funding those plans that have a clear vision and track record of success,” said Arne Duncan, the Secretary of Education, in a press release.
