Five man, all from Paterson, have been charged with stealing unemployment checks from peoples mailboxes all across Passaic County, according to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.

Raulin Lopez, 25-year-old, the supposed ring leader; Enmanuel Rodriguez, 28; Sandy Rodriguez, 35; Amauris Monsanto, 42; Danys Rosario, 38 — all were arrested on various charges of money laundering and conspiracy.

The way they stole the checks from mailboxes were as follows: one of the five man would follow the mail carriers around to see where he was delivering the checks. When the mailman delivered the letter, they would search the mailbox for checks, and upon finding it, steal it.

“Between October 2008 and May 2010, the defendants converted approximately $118,167 in stolen checks to cash,” According to the Attorney General’s Office.

After receiving reports from the recipients of the checks the U.S. Postal Inspection Service launched an investigation into the matter which discovered that a large number of checks that were stolen in Paterson were deposited into PNC and JP Morgan Chase bank accounts owned by Mr Lopez.

Three of the above mentioned persons had prior criminal records, and were free on bail; readers will recall in November Mr Lopez was arrested by Paterson Police for robbing individuals using a machine gun.
