Jose Katz, a cardiologist, who had an office in Paterson, has told federal authorities that, he in fact defrauded thousands of patients by falsely diagnosing them, and then asking patients to get various medical tests that only profited his company.

According to the FBI, “the loss amount suffered by the victims is the largest recorded in New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut for an individual practitioner convicted of health care fraud.” Mr Katz billed well-over $19 million to various insurances agencies including government programs such as a medicare. Mr Katz, 68-year-old, was a prominent individual in his field — his resume is longer than the biography page of most famous politicians on online encyclopedias. “After years of prominence in his field, Jose Katz will now be remembered for his record-setting fraud,” said Paul J. Fishman, U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey.

Some of the unnecessary tests that he had patients complete involved unlicensed and unqualified individuals who were running medical shops without proper paperwork or training putting the patients at risk.

Mr Katz face five to ten years in prison for his conduct. A written statement issued by the FBI said, “At sentencing, currently scheduled before Judge Linares on July 23, 2013, Katz will also be ordered to pay restitution to victims of his offenses. Katz was granted $200,000 bail pending sentencing.”
