A contract of $22,800 was awarded to the Passaic County Community College on Tuesday by the City Council to provide basic emergency medical technician training to 19 firefighters.

The college has previously, in March 2013, provided EMT training to Patersonians under the Health Profession Opportunity Grant, a federal grant, free of cost to qualifying residents based on income and legal status. However, the college is not training the firefighters for free.

Training will be provided to 19 new firefighters from the Paterson Fire Department: “emergency medical technician basic training for 19 new firefighters,” reads the resolution.

The contract was awarded “without competitive bidding,” reads the resolution, because the amount involved is minuscule; the college will be barred from making any political donations so long as the contract is in effect.
