A city man was wounded in the chest on Saturday evening after exchanging heated words with another man who produced a weapon and fired multiple shots, according to the Paterson Police Department.

The victim, 24-year-old, was in the People’s Park section of the city near the intersection of 21st Avenue and Martin Street at 9:40 p.m. on Saturday when a heated argument with another fellow left him with a gunshot wound to the chest.

“The victim became involved in a heated verbal argument with another male, and during that exchange, the male produced a handgun, at which time several shots were fired,” said Patrick Murray of the Ceasefire Unit.

One of the gunshots landed in the 24-year-old’s chest wounding him badly. “The victim was struck once in the chest area, and was transported to the hospital by a friend in a private vehicle,” said police.

The victim is in stable condition, according to police.

The investigation is ongoing at this time, and anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Francisco Brito or Detective Dave Tanis of the Ceasefire Unit at 973-321-1342.
