After going to bid to repair the large number of potholes throughout the city in March, the city council on Tuesday evening approved a $104,000 contract to Jak Construction Corp of Brick Township.

Five companies submitted bids: Crossroads Pavement and Maintenance of Nutley, $158,750; AJM Contractors of Clifton, $213,750; D&L Paving Contractors, $239,375; and J.R. Haftek of Paterson, $304,750.

The local city based company submitted the highest bid while Jak Construction Corp was the least expensive at $103,750, according to city document.

The awarding of contract presents some good news for city residents, who have been clamoring over the city’s pothole problems long before the harsh winter wreaked havoc on city roads.

The company will fix potholes throughout the city, according to officials. Kenneth Morris, councilman at-large, noted pothole repair jobs in a neighboring town and asked whether the city is hiring the same company to do its roads.

“Are we using the same company West Paterson used?” asked Morris during the special meeting of the council. “They did a great job doing Squirrelwood Road.”

“We all use the same company,” responded Charles Thomas, the city’s business administrator.

“All I know is, soon as we get ours done and they got their at around the same time, our better last as long as theirs,” remarked Morris.
