A city woman was wounded by gunfire during the early morning hours of Friday while she was leaving a house party with a group, according to the Paterson Police Department.

The victim, 23-year-old, was outside with a group of people following a house party at around 2:40 a.m. on Friday when a shooter fired at the crowd. “While walking within the crowd, multiple shots we fired from the area of Jefferson and North 3rd Streets, and the victim was struck at that time,” said Patrick Murray, head of the Ceasefire Unit.

The victim sustained gunshot wound to the leg, according to police.

Police received alerts of gunfire in the area of Garfield Avenue and North 3rd Street. Officers arrived on the scene without finding a victim. Minutes later, police received a call from St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center that a gunshot victim had arrived by private vehicle. The woman was treated and released.

“Detectives at this time do not believe that the victim was targeted, and the investigation is continuing at this time,” said Murray.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Rolando Polio or Detective Edgar Taylor of the Ceasefire Unit at 973-321-1342.
