paterson-police-2014

A city girl was shot in the head during the evening hours of Saturday on Rosa Parks Boulevard.

Genesis Rincon, 12-year-old, was riding a scooter outside on Rosa Parks Boulevard near Warren Street with two other children at around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday when she was struck by a bullet in the head.

Rincon was attending a family gathering nearby which she left briefly to run to the store with another boy and girl to find the store was closed. As the trio was returning a gunman, possibly from a white jeep, fired towards the sidewalk unintentionally hitting Rincon.

Police received calls about the shooting and responded to the scene to find the girl was struck in the head. The other two children were spared.

Rincon was rushed to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment where she was pronounced brain dead. Rincon’s family plans to donate the girl’s organs to save others.

Authorities are investigating the incident. “We are investigating,” chief assistant prosecutor Michael DeMarco said. “The investigation is active and ongoing.”

Updated 5pm.

Correction: The initial story had stated the girl was 14-year-old it has been confirmed her age is 12.

I send my deepest condolences to the family and friends of this young lady. In this light, I continue to wonder when the perpetuity of all of this violence will dissolve within our communities, and beyond. The story of 12 year old Genesis Rincon is exactly why we are fighting to end gun violence and reclaim our neighborhoods in Paterson.
