A $147,422 federal grant was issued to the city earlier in the week, announced congressman Bill Pascrell. The U.S. Department of Justice’s Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) will be used by the city’s police department to purchase equipment for its emergency response unit.

“I am proud to see the federal dollars that I fight for in Washington benefit public safety on our streets here at home,” Pascrell said. The congressman earlier in the year fought to keep the JAG program fully funded.

“JAG grants give local police departments direct access to the federal resources they need to confront our neighborhood’s greatest threats,” Pascrell said. “As a former mayor, I fully understand the importance of having a fully equipped police force, which is why I’ll continue to fight and ensure that the JAG program is fully funded.”

The program allows the grant money to be utilized in law enforcement programs, prosecution and court programs, crime prevention and education, corrections and community corrections programs, drug treatment programs and planning evaluation and technology improvement programs.

Representing New Jersey’s 9th Congressional District, Pascrell also brought $80,223 in JAG funding for City of Passaic and $18,432 for City of Clifton.
