A city teen has been charged with the death of her two-month-old son, announced Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes on Friday afternoon.

The teen, whose name and age has been withheld by authorities, is being charged with “delinquency for committing an act, which if committed by an adult, would constitute one count of first-degree Manslaughter and one count of second-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child for allegedly causing the death of her two-month old son,” according to a statement released by the prosecutor’s office.

The teenager is being charged over an October 31, 2013 incident that ultimately resulted in the death of her two-month-old son. At around 8 a.m. the mother realized her son was not breathing. She and other family members dialed 911.

Police officers and emergency medical personnel arrived at the city home to render assistance. The child was rushed to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center where he was shortly pronounced dead.

“The Medical Examiner’s Office subsequently declared the death a homicide and after an investigation conducted by the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, it was determined that the juvenile mother would be charged with her son’s death,” prosecutor’s office said.

Police have not yet determined what pushed the girl into allegedly killing her son.

Authorities have said the investigation is ongoing and a complaint against the teen has been forwarded to the Passaic County Superior Court’s family division.

Correction: Original article stated two-year-old when it was a two-month-old child.
