A city teenager is in police custody over an August 27 shooting of a 20-year-old at the intersection of Carroll Street and Hamilton Avenue, according to the Paterson Police Department.

The suspect, 16-year-old, was apprehended by police following an investigation into the shooting incident by detectives Christopher Ravallese of the Ceasefire Unit and Michael Boone of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office. He has been charged with attempted murder and weapon possession.

Police said the teen has been identified as the shooter in the August 27 shooting that left a 20-year-old wounded in the back. The incident unfolded at around 7:40 p.m. near Fair Street. The suspect and the victim were involved in an altercation that escalated into the suspect pulling a gun.

Police said the victim attempted to flee the gunman but as he was making for escape he was struck by bullet in the upper torso.

“The juvenile was taken into custody by Boone and Ravallese on Monday afternoon without incident,” said Patrick Murray, head of the Ceasefire Unit.

The teen is being detained at the Essex County Detention Center, Murray said.
