A city man was wounded during the afternoon hours of Monday near North 9th Street, according to the Paterson Police Department.

The victim, 24-year-old, was in the area of Belmont Avenue and North 9th Street at around 5:30 p.m. on Monday when he was approached by a gunman.

“The initial investigation by Ceasefire Detectives suggests that the victim was walking on Belmont Avenue when he was approached by a male dressed in a dark hooded sweatshirt,” said Patrick Murray, head of the Ceasefire Unit. “As the male approached the victim, he produced a handgun and began firing at the victim, striking him in the buttocks.”

Murray said police found the wounded victim on the scene and transported him to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment. The victim is in stable condition, Murray said.

The suspect then fled the area on foot, and the victim was transported for treatment. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Christopher Ravallese or Prosecutor’s Detective Michael Boone of the Ceasefire Unit at 973-321-1342.
