In a close race between eight candidates vying for three up for grabs seats in the city’s board of education, Chrystal Cleaves, incumbent, is leading the bunch with 98-percent of votes counted. She has secured 4,048 votes.

The unofficial count for other candidates are as follows:

Lilisa Mimms: 3,154
Jonathan Hodges: 3,159
Nelly Celi: 2,499
Emanuel Capers: 2,023
Khader “Ken” Abuassab: 1,571
Koyes Ahmed: 1,840
Taj Uddin: 668

Three candidates with the most votes will each win a seat at the board. Flavio Rivera, who filled in the vacant seat left behind by Alex Mendez after he captured a city council seat earlier in the year, who is running uncontested for a two-year term to complete Mendez’s term, received 2,997 votes.

The other eight candidates are running for complete three-year terms. Cleaves is the only other incumbent running in the race with Wendy Guzman, who decided not to run for re-election, essentially retiring from politics.

This article will be updated as election officials tally votes.
