Two New York men transporting $3,500 worth of marijuana were brought into police custody during the evening hours of Monday, according to Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik.

The vehicle’s driver Gabriela Cruz, 21, of Yonkers, New York and Lazaro Rivas, 27, of the Bronx, New York were pulled over at the intersection of Main and River streets at around 7 p.m. on Monday.

Sheriff’s Officer Jose Vargas and Deputy Richard Rosenel pulled over the suspicious 2000 Gold Nissan with New York registrations to find strong marijuana stench coming out of the vehicle. “During the stop, they observed a strong smell of raw marijuana,” according to Berdnik. “A consent to search was conducted which uncovered 3 large packages of marijuana with a total weight of 3 pounds. The estimate street value is $3,500.”

Cruz and Rivas were charged with drug possession with the intent to distribute and possession with intent to distribute within 500 feet of a public park. The two men were processed and transported to city police lockup, Berdnik said.
