Merchants of the downtown business district are holding a day of festivity inviting all city residents to participate in the city’s annual Christmas tree lightening ceremony to be held on Saturday, December 13.

Sponsored by the Downtown Paterson Special Improvement District the event will kick off at 5 p.m. with Santa’s Village on Colt Street where children will be allowed to take free take-home photos with Santa Claus, get involved in face painting, and have a meet-and-greet session with Frosty the Snowman and other kids show characters.

Saturday’s event will also feature artists sculpting holiday characters out of ice in front of families. Kids will hold group games and a raffle will follow at around 7 p.m. after Mayor Jose “Joey” Torres and Mrs. Claus light the 35-foot tall spruce tree in the heart of downtown.

Three Xbox One game systems will be raffled at the event. Organizers are encouraging city residents to shop local at the more than 150 downtown businesses with the first 200 shoppers set to receive free reusable tote bags.

Fireworks will follow at 7:30 p.m.
