Honor Newtown victims with action for gun violence prevention‏

letter-to-editor-hq

On December 14, Americans will remember the 20 children and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary whose lives were taken by a heavily armed man just two years ago. Many will light candles and send their thoughts and prayers. Others will wonder why little has been done to prevent senseless tragedies like these from happening again.

There have been nearly 100 school shootings since Newtown. In addition to school shootings that kill and leave communities scarred and scared, gun violence in all of its destructive forms continues to plague our nation’s cities and towns. New Jersey has had a particularly troubled year of gun violence, including more than a dozen domestic violence related murder/suicides. The Garden State also continues to hold the dubious honor of being the leading importer of illegal crime guns in the country.

As a supporter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, I know that more can be done to keep our families safe from gun violence and its spurious effects.  Newtown was a wake up call for many who had not considered the impacts of gun violence in their own lives. Out of tragedy has come a grassroots movement of more than 2.5 million members dedicated to taking action to reduce gun violence. Moms and families across this country are taking action and creating real change. Are you?
