The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded $4,598,160 in grants to various community-based projects in Passaic and Bergen counties, announced Congressman Bill Pascrell.

Part of HUD’s Continuum of Care Program, the grants are designed to alleviate homelessness in the Bergen-Passaic area. The funds will help provide shelter and care for the homeless. The care program’s grants help provide permanent and transitional housing to the homeless as well as fund services like health care, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, child care, and job training.

“The $4.6 million in funding will go directly to those on the front lines in the battle against homelessness,” Pascrell said. “These dollars are an investment in our people and our community, and I am proud that we were able to bring them home to Bergen and Passaic counties.”

Passaic County is to receive $1.63 million and Bergen County $2.89 million. Bergen County’s largest grant of $814,940 went to an Opening Doors program run by Vantage Health System. The program finds permanent housing and offers support to homeless families with school age children in the county.

“This money will go a long way toward giving the Bergen County Housing Authority and other local organizations the necessary tools to help combat and prevent homelessness in our communities,” Bergen County Executive James Tedesco said. “I want to thank Congressman Bill Pascrell for working to secure these federal funds.”

Passaic County’s largest grant went to Straight and Narrow in the amount of $516,282.

“The winter months are dangerous and hard on the homeless,” Passaic County Freeholder Director Hector C. Lora said.  “We stand with Congressman Pascrell in his fight for funding of local community-based programs that provide shelter and care for those without homes.”

“I am proud to fight for our community in Washington and am committed to do what I can to help our most vulnerable populations,” Pascrell said.
