A city man was nabbed by sheriff’s officers on routine patrol of Broadway early Friday morning, according to the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office.

Alqawi Saadiq, 51, was observed behaving suspiciously in the area of Carroll Street and Broadway at around 5:14 a.m. on Friday.

Sheriff’s Officer Eric Fajardo and Detective Helman Fava observed Saadiq drop a magnetic plastic case on the sidewalk. The officers watched as Saadiq returned to pick up the item he previously dropped to the sidewalk.

Fajardo and Fava approached the suspect asking him what was inside the plastic case. “It’s probably drugs,” Saadiq told the officers.

The officers asked Saadiq to show what was inside the bag at which point he was placed under arrest, Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik said.

Inside the plastic case was 36 bags of suspected crack cocaine and 100 glassine envelopes of heroin, authorities said.

Saadiq is charged with two counts of drug possession, distribution within 1,000 feet of a school, and manufacturing, distributing, or dispensing drugs. The suspect was found to have active warrants out of Paterson, Newark, and Wayne.

Berdnik said the street value of the drugs is approximately $800. Saadiq was transported to city police lockup awaiting bail hearing.

“Once again, Officers on routine Patrol were able to see suspicious behavior and were able to arrest an individual involved in the distribution of both heroin and crack cocaine,” Berdnik said.” I want to commend both Officers for their efforts in actively pursuing this arrest.”
