New Jersey’s largest anti-poverty organization, the Eva’s Village received $500,000 in grant money from the Newman’s Own Foundation to launch an e-commerce cookie and brownie business.

The development of the e-ecommerce business will be guided by retiring president and chief operating officer of Newman’s Own Foundation Tom Indoe. The e-ecommerce business is being developed with two goals in mind to create jobs and raise funds to support Eva’s Village programs.

“We are very excited about the expansion of our social enterprise initiatives,” executive director of the Eva’s Village Marie Reger said. “We began with The Culinary School at Eva’s Village in 2014 and now we are expanding our efforts to include a business which will create jobs and provide funding for our programs.”

Indoe joined the culinary school’s advisory board in September, but even before that he has been advocate of programs run by the anti-poverty organization that began as a soup kitchen in 1982. “After joining the board I realized there was a unique opportunity to build a source of job opportunities and funding to help Eva’s Village continue its mission to help people in need,” Indoe said.

Planning for the e-ecommerce business has already been initiated. Officials from the organization have meet with other organizations doing similar work. Presently, the organization is investigating product options, testing product options, and launching development of the e-ecommerce website.

The e-ecommerce business is expected to be online by September 2015 from the organization’s Prince Street culinary school training kitchen.

“We are grateful to Newman’s Own Foundation and Tom Indoe for helping us launch this venture,” Reger said.
