City police arrested two men with a handgun and drugs on 10th Avenue on Monday evening breaking up a loud street party at the intersection of East 26th Street, said police director Jerry Speziale.

Cleon Hyde, 27, of Clifton; and Everton Evans, 26, of Paterson were arrested by police officers William Neibandk and Ryan Duffy after a chase. Police responded to the area when officers observed a large gathering with loud music and gambling taking place in the area, said Speziale.

When police appeared on the corner, the group, dropping bottles, began to disburse. Police ordered the group to stop, but only two obeyed the officers. Two others – Hyde and Evans — ran from police, but officers gave chase.

Hyde was observed throwing a plastic bag into an empty cab of a rack truck, said the director. The bag was found to contain 13 zip lock bags of suspected marijuana, 20 glassine bags of suspected heroin, and 37 bag of crack cocaine.

Evans was observed dropping a black revolver, said Speziale. Police recovered a RGIND .22 caliber revolver loaded with six live rounds, said the director.

Both were arrested. Evans has been charged with weapon offenses. Hyde has been charged with drug charges as well as distributing drugs in a school zone.

“Earlier in the evening, I received numerous complaints about loud noise in the area and requested units to pay special attention to the area, which they did and in fact were successful in removing a gun and drugs from our streets,” said Speziale.

The director commended the city’s police force for their effort in making the city safer.
