City police arrested an 18-year-old and a 15-year-old following a lengthy car pursuit through city streets from Manor Road to Lyon Street on Tuesday that ended in a crash, said police director Jerry Speziale.

Police officer Claude Mineo identified a red Dodge Charge that was stolen from Rocky’s Auto Sales on Chamberlain Avenue the night before on 16th Avenue and Madison Avenue at about 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The stolen vehicle was being operated by 18-year-old Tahad Caster with a 15-year-old on the passenger seat, the director said. Mineo communicated the information about the stolen vehicle to police sergeant Peter Hasselberger.

Hasselberger ordered Mineo to keep the vehicle in eyesight and wait for other units. Mineo trailed the vehicle which, as soon as it reached the Ellison Street intersection, ran through the red light, and on to 14th Avenue.

A vehicle pursuit began. Officer J. Di Piazza joined. During the ensuing pursuit the charger made several passes through Manor Road and East 33rd Street. Mineo gave up primary position to officer R. Shirey as the car fled towards the city’s Riverside section.

At about 11:59 p.m. the vehicle crashed into a wall in front of 84 Lyon Street.

Both the driver and the passenger exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot, said the director. Police K9 “Barry” controlled by officers B. Culmone and Officer M. Bashir quickly caught Caster. Officers Mineo, W. Herrmmann, and G. Galvin captured the 15-year-old.

Caster sustained injuries to his leg as he ran from the dog and officers. He was transported to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment.

At the scene of the 1.6-mile long chase police recovered a cluster of vehicle keys that belonged to the Chamberlain Avenue dealership. Along with the charger, the night prior, a Mercedes-Benz was stolen from the dealership’s lot.

Sergeant E. Cruz and officer J. Phelan prepared reports in recovering the second vehicle. Caster was charged with resisting arrest, eluding, receiving stolen property, and a number of motor vehicle violations.

“The officer recognized the crime patterns occurring in our city quickly identified the vehicle and arrested those responsible before more vehicles were stolen,” said Speziale. “The supervisors and officers involved were calculated, coordinated and safely handled this situation.”
