Margaret Cherone, mayor Mayor Jose “Joey” Torres’ finance director appointment, received unanimous approval from the city council on Tuesday evening.

Torres appointed Cherone as permanent finance director for an annual salary of $140,000 to replace James TenHoeve who filled in after Anthony Zambrano retired from the post upon the mayor’s return to office for a third term.

TenHoeve worked as a consultant through his company Professional Transitional Assistance which was awarded a contract last July.

Cherone previously worked under Torres’ administration as finance director from 2002 to 2004, according to her resume. Her resume states she also worked for the city as treasurer from 1989 to 1997.

Cherone has been working as chief financial officer at West New York from 2012, according to her resume. Her salary there was $125,000, according to records from the Hudson County municipality.

Torres had put her forward as finance director earlier in the year; however, city officials pulled her confirmation stating she will be put up for confirmation at a later date.

The same week Torres made known he intended to appoint Cherone as finance director, her daughter Rachel Parada secured a $35,000 position as paralegal in the city.

Cherone is now the highest paid department director in Torres’ administration.

Council members approved Cherone’s appointment in a 9-0 vote.
