Authorities arrested a Newark man driving a stolen car after a vehicle chase in the city on Tuesday afternoon, according to Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik.

Dennis Jones, 33, was arrested on Grand and Jersey streets at around 5:30 p.m. and charged with receiving stolen property, eluding, and resisting arrest, authorities said.

Jones was driving a 2003 Honda Accord stolen out of East Orange that was spotted by Sheriff’s Officers Tolerico and Royce on Main and Grand streets.

Tolerico and Royce commenced a motor vehicle stop, but Jones reversed his car striking Tolerico’s Patrol Unit almost hitting Officer Royce. Jones then fled with the vehicle triggering a pursuit.

The Sheriff’s Officers chased Jones’s vehicle to Route 19 near Route 80, authorities said.

On Route 19 the stolen vehicle sustained a flat tire. The vehicle rammed into the patrol unit causing minor damage to the interceptor’s front bumper, Berdnik said.

Jones got out of the vehicle and began to flee on foot. Sheriff’s Officers gave chase and arrested the suspect on Grand and Jersey streets.

Berdnik said Sheriff’s Officer Royce sustained ankle injury during the arrest. The officer was transported to St. Joesph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Jones was also charged with assault with a weapon for using the vehicle as a weapon and weapon possession, the stolen vehicle.
