Acting on a citizen tip that a gunman was near the intersection of May and River Streets, police officers arrested a 19-year-old city man following foot chase through Paterson’s Riverside section on Sunday night, according to police director Jerry Speziale.

Jahreek Cleaves was reported as a suspicious person with a gun in the neighborhood by an anonymous tipster at about 11 p.m.

Police officers Thomas Giaquinto and Sebastian Gomez responded to the area and spotted a suspect matching the description provided by the anonymous community member. Seeing law enforcement officers, Cleaves began to run.

Giaquinto and Gomez requested assistance from emergency response team (ERT) officer Robert Klein and canine Monty. Klein and the police dog recovered a loaded silver Smith & Wesson .38 caliber revolver and four zip lock bags of marijuana.

Cleaves has been charged with weapon possession, resisting arrest, drug possession, and other charges, said the director.

“Clearly, this is another example of the collaboration between the community and our department,” said Speziale. “The public has recognized that the department is responsive to their needs and has stepped up their TIPS to the police department.”
