With a week before deadline to turn in petitions for the 1st Ward special election, four city council hopefuls have submitted the requisite signatures, according to the city clerk’s office.

Alveria Spencer, Veronica Ovalles, Bernard Jones, Jr., and Michael Jackson have so far submitted the needed 137 signatures.

Spencer and Ovalles have been certified as candidates for the November 3rd, 2015 election to fill the vacancy left behind by disgraced councilman Anthony Davis. If all petitions are valid, Jones and Jackson should be certified within the week.

Davis, who represented the 1st Ward, was sentenced to a two-year prison term for taking $10,000 in bribe money from a purported developer working with the FBI.

The former councilman resigned his seat soon after he was charged with bribery clearing the way for a special election. The winner of the November election will complete the remainder of Davis’ term which ends on June 30th, 2016.

James Staton, pastor and community leader, has been representing the 1st Ward on the council for the past eight months after he was appointed by council members in late December.

A slew of 1st Ward residents have expressed their interest on vying for the vacant post; however, as of Monday afternoon only four have submitted the necessary signatures.

Those who have yet to submit the requisite signatures have until August 31st, 2015 at 4 p.m. to do so.
