Teacher: Superintendent should communicate his desire to keep libraries open to school principals

letter-to-editor-hq

I’d like to respond to your article of August 24, in which Superintendent of Schools, Donnie Evans stated “There was never any intent to close the school libraries of Paterson.”

I am a teacher in the Paterson school system. I teach in elementary school #19. School 19 had an excellent library and librarian. Our librarian kept reading logs for each student from kindergarten to fourth grade. She worked on projects and assignments with the students. The library was full of resource materials for all subjects.

This past May, our principal told the staff that our library would not be used next year and the librarian would have to find a new assignment. When the principal was asked the reason for this closure, we were given no reason. She said this was what she wanted. She took away an active, positive, resourceful, tool for both teachers and students.

If Dr. Evans is so intent on keeping the libraries in our school as a vital educational tool, he should relay those feelings to his principals.
