A 26-year-old city man was sentenced to a 40-year prison term for murdering his former girlfriend in front of their 17-month old child, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Kerry Richardson, 26-year-old, was sentenced by New Jersey Superior Court Judge Marilyn C. Clark on Wednesday for stabbing to death his 21-year-old girlfriend Katera Robinson on April 18, 2012, according to authorities.

Robinson had a no-contact restraining order against Richardson, but the boyfriend went to the woman’s home armed with a knife and with the intention to murder the girlfriend, Richardson admitted in court when he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and fourth-degree contempt of court.

Richardson attacked the girlfriend with the knife repeatedly in front of their 17-month old daughter. He admitted the knife blade broke from its handle during the stabbing.

Authorities said the boyfriend left Robinson gravely wounded in her apartment alone with their daughter. The woman was able to call 911 to tell police about the attack and the identity of the attacker.

Police found Robinson in a pool of her own blood with her daughter next to her. She was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly thereafter from the stab wounds, authorities said.

Richardson must serve 35 years in prison before becoming eligible for parole, authorities said.
