A 20-year-old city man was arrested in connection with a North 3rd Street incident where a policewoman’s service weapon was discharged, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Ameer S. Elkaryoney, 20, is charged with second-degree eluding and aggravated assault, authorities said. Elkaryoney allegedly dragged a police officer down the block on Jefferson and North 3rd streets at around 6 a.m. on Saturday as he was fleeing in a motor vehicle, authorities said.

The policewoman observed a vehicle on the street that matched one that was involved in a shooting on East 39th Street less than an hour before, according to police sources. She saw an abandoned black tinted Acura running on the street, according to witnesses.

Her weapon was discharged during the incident, but no injuries were reported, authorities said. The police officer was injured from the dragging and had to be treated for her injuries resulting from the incident.

Elkaryoney could face a 10-year prison term if convicted on the two charges, authorities said.
