Four city high schools have been recognized through first lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Active Schools campaign for promoting exercise and active living among students during the 2014-15 school year, announced the district on Tuesday morning.

The School of Culinary Arts, Hospitality and Tourism at Eastside High School; the School of Government and Public Administration at Eastside High School; the School of Information Technology at Eastside High School; and the School of Education and Training at John F. Kennedy High School received bronze Let’s Move! Active Schools awards.

The School of Education and Training at John F. Kennedy High School also received a bronze National Healthy Schools award from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s healthy schools program.

The Preakness Avenue high school had to meet and exceed stringent standards in various criteria including health education, nutrition services, family, and community involvement to win the bronze National Healthy School award, according to the district.

In order to win Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Active Schools awards the district had to commit to integrating at least 60 minutes of physical activity for students.

The city’s four school are among 51 recognized throughout the Garden State to be recognized as active schools. Nationally, the first lady’s active schools program recognized 525 American schools.

The four schools will be recognized by the city’s board of education and the superintendent on Tuesday evening.

“These schools are raising the bar by creating Active School environments where students are happier, healthier, and higher-performing,” said Obama in a press release last week. “I am thrilled with their success through Let’s Move! Active Schools – they’re helping to create a new norm where physical activity is a fundamental aspect of a young person’s success both in the classroom and in life.”

Two city elementary schools – School 5, 8 – and two high schools — School of Government and Public Administration at Eastside High School and the School of Information Technology at Eastside High School – were recognized as active schools during 2013-14 school year.
