The city’s police department in stepped up traffic enforcement handed out 2,720 tickets during a two-day special operation, according to police director Jerry Speziale.

The operation was not limited to traffic enforcement. The director said from September 11th to 13th, 2015 police officers towed 159 vehicles, arrested 18 individuals on outstanding warrants, and apprehended seven on drug related charges.

One person was arrested for obstruction, another for eluding, a third for disorderly conduct, and three more on weapons possession. The director said two .45 caliber handguns were recovered as well as a 9 mm Mac-11, a weapon of war, with high capacity magazine.

Police also issued 174 municipal ordinance violations, said Speziale.

Speziale said police recovered a large amount of narcotics during the operation. He said police officers recovered 311 glassines of heroin, 107 baggies and eight grams of marijuana, 41 MDMA pills, and 29 Oxycodone pills.

The director said police confiscated and disposed “numerous” alcoholic beverages. Police also investigated a fatal auto accident during the operation, said the director.

$1,105 in cash was confiscated during the operation.

The director praised the city’s police officers for their work in building a safer city. “Crime suppression, community collaboration and the hard work displayed daily by the men and women will achieve a safer Paterson,” said Speziale.
