The New Jersey Community Development Corporation (NJCDC) received a $102,000 grant from Morristown-based women’s philanthropic organization Impact100 Garden State to fund programs for the elderly poor, young adults, and preschool from low-income households.

Grant money will be used to fund NJCDC’s FreePair Paterson Program to combat poverty in the Great Fall neighborhood.

“The program will help to bridge the gap between two generations — youth ages 16-24 who have dropped out of high school, and the elderly and disabled living in poverty, “ stated vice-president of NJCDC Seth Friedman (pictured, right).

Disadvantaged youth will be provided the opportunity to obtain their high school equivalency certificate or GED. They will also obtain vocational certificates in construction, according to NJCDC.

The youth will receive on-the-job training by repairing the homes of 500 elderly and disabled homeowners or renters unable to afford repairs to their living space. Repairs will be conducted under the watch of a construction instructor.

“The young adults who will participate in the new FreePair Paterson program have been unable to finish high school for reasons that were often out of their control,” Vicky Hernandez (pictured, left),  NJCDC’s Chief Program Officer, said. “They have been victims of poverty, crime, abuse and homelessness.”

Impact100 Garden State also awarded a $102,000 grant to the Head Start Community Program of Morris County. The two organizations were selected from a pool of more than 75 nonprofit applicants.

The grant monies were awarded at Impact100 Garden State’s annual members meeting on November 4, 2015 at the Olde Mill Inn in Basking Ridge.

“The Impact 100 grant will give these young adults a second chance to become employable, self-sufficient adults,” Hernandez said.
