A city public works employee and another were arrested in an East 24th Street gambling bust on Friday, said police director Jerry Speziale.

Willie Sparks, 42, and Jarvis Randolph, 45, both city residents, were arrested during a gambling bust at 733 East 24th Street, according to police.

Police recovered 15 baggies of marijuana and confiscated $1,680.00 in suspected gambling proceeds, said the director.

Randolph was arrested on various drug offenses as well as gambling charges including promoting gambling, having gambling records, maintaining a gambling resort, and having gambling devices, said the director.

Sparks, a city public works employee, was on duty at the time of arrest on obstruction of a governmental function and resisting by flight, said the director.

Randolph was also charged with resisting arrest and obstruction of a governmental function.

Another city Department of Public Works (DPW) employee was arrested on Tuesday, according to the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office. City resident Clarence Chambers, 47, a sewer maintenance worker at public works, completed a crack-cocaine, marijuana transaction when detectives arrested him and his alleged customer.

Chambers was also found in possession of crack-cocaine and marijuana, according to the county.

“City employees do not have impunity and will be charged accordingly,” said Speziale. “If we receive information that an employee is involved or knows about criminal activity they will be dealt with decisively and swiftly.”
