A 17-year-old city teenager, who aimed a gun at a city police officer, was arrested early Thursday morning, said police director Jerry Speziale.

Police responded to reports of someone shooting a gun in the air in the vicinity of Mary and Weiss Streets at about 3:06 a.m. Officer M. Avila arrived at the scene, saw the suspect walking towards his interceptor, and quickly exited the vehicle for his safety.

Avila held the suspect at gunpoint and issued instructions. The young man fled towards Weiss Street.

Sergeant D. DeAngelis came in as back up and began chasing the teen heading towards Main Street. A silver handgun was in the 17-year-old’s possession, police observed.

The teenager pointed the gun in the direction of the police officers, who took cover, and ordered the suspect drop the weapon and remain in place.

The teenager threw the weapon in the air landing it on a rooftop. Avilla remained with the weapon while DeAngelis chased the suspect to the alleyway of 259 Marshall Street, where the teen was subdued and taken into custody.

“This situation could have turned out to be a very different set of circumstances, but based on the officers’ quick actions this was defused and ended safely,” said Speziale. “This situation shows the outstanding abilities, response and restraint used by Paterson’s finest.”

Police recovered the loaded chrome 45 caliber handgun, which was reported stolen out of Pennsylvania, from the rooftop of 7 Weiss Street.

The youth was identified as the individual shooting bullets into the air at the location from camera footage, according to police. He was charged with aggravated assault, obstruction of a governmental function, resisting arrest by flight, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, receiving stolen property, said the director.

Speziale said the 17-year-old was transported to the juvenile detention center in Newark.
