City police arrested an armed drug dealer during an investigation on Rosa Parks Boulevard and Hamilton Avenue on Friday afternoon, said police director Jerry Speziale.

Phillip L. Smith, 40, of Godwin Avenue, was charged with various weapon and drug charges, according to police.

Smith had 100 glassines of heroin and a stolen Colt 45 handgun, said the director. His home at 165 Godwin Avenue was also searched, according to police.

Police said Smith also had a sawed off shotgun, said the director. “Two high-power handguns once again taken off our streets by the fine work of our narcotics division,” said Speziale.

The director said the suspect the case should be exposed to federal attention so that Smith receives a more severe punishment. He was also charged with “certain person not to have a gun” – a charge reserved for those who have committed previous offenses.

“We will take one block at a time, one bag at a time and one gun at a time until we achieve a safer city,” said the police director.
