Three people were wounded in two separate shootings early Saturday morning in the city, according to police.

A 22-year-old Haledon man was wounded in the lower leg at about 2:50 a.m. on 12th Avenue near East 23rd Street, according to police.

A second shooting on 10th Avenue and East 24th Street at about 5 a.m. left one victim with a gunshot wound to the upper leg and another with a gunshot wound to the lower leg, according to police.

In the first shooting the Haledon man was standing outside of a vehicle on 12th Avenue when he was approached by two armed male suspects at which point the suspects demanded his property, according to police. One of the suspects shot the victim in the leg during the robbery, said police. The 22-year-old drove to a Lake Street home to call for police and medical assistance.

In the second shooting the two victims exited a house party when they were approached on East 24th Street near 10th Avenue by a group of 5-7 male suspects. One of the suspects brandished a handgun and made demands for their possessions.

Shots were fired and the two men were struck in the leg. The first victim a 37-year-old city resident ran to a home on East 24th Street for help; the second victim, a 43-year-old Newark man fled on foot and was located by police officers on East 23rd Street near 10th Avenue.

All three are in stable condition, according to police. Police are looking into whether the two incidents are related.

Police director Jerry Speziale said the city is working to include 12th Avenue on its business curfew, hot spots ordinance to get a better handle of the violence there by increasing police patrols and ensuring troublesome late night businesses are closed after midnight.

Police appear to have successfully communicated their low tolerance for shooters who aim to kill by transferring several of them to federal custody which results in them being shipped out far from the Silk City, according to law enforcement officials.

The most recent incidents shootings suspects inflicted minor injuries on the victims. Shooters have wounded victims in the hands, legs, foot, and arms rather than aiming for the body or neck.

The director said the city is still on track to see a 20-percent reduction in shootings this year. He said the unseasonably warm weather has contributed to flare up of violence in city streets.

Anyone with information about the shootings are being urged to contact Ceasefire detective Rolando Polio or Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office detective Michael Boone at (973) 321-1342.
