The city’s job training program to prepare some residents for employment in the construction trade has attracted 30 applicants so far, said Tom Eastwick, president of HoHoKus School of Trade and Technical Sciences.

Carpentry, plumbing, welding and electrical expertise are some of the marketable skills the 20 individuals selected for the tuition-free job training program will obtain, according to officials.

Deadline to apply for the program is Friday, January 15th, 2016 at 3 p.m.

Mayor Jose “Joey” Torres announced the lottery to select the 20 eligible trainees will take place on Monday, January 18th, 2016. “All unemployed Paterson residents who are in need of occupational training may apply for this grant, which offers hands-on education in specialized, well-remunerated fields,” said Torres.

An applicant must have a high school diploma or GED, undergo drug screening and pledge to remain drug free, and pass an examination on Accuplacer or something similar.

“I would hope we’ll end up with 20,” said Eastwick. He suggested the requirements might narrow down the number of applicants to 10 or 12 unless there’s a flurry of applications streaming in this week.

The 20 trainees selected next Monday will attend school Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and then they will work on Thursdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Paterson utilizing the skills they have learned at the HoHoKus School of Trade and Technical Sciences, according to the mayor’s office.

The training per person costs $12,000, but the city is paying $4,000 from a fund collected from road resurfacing contractors through Torres’ $35 million road reconstruction project. $4,000 is being picked up by the Passaic County Workforce Development Center, and the rest of the $4,000 will be covered by the trade school, according to both city and school officials.

“It’s an incredible opportunity for Paterson residents, that could not afford education otherwise, to be able to train for successful careers in the trade field,” said Eastwick.
