Two men were arrested with a loaded handgun and marijuana after one of them vandalized a Shell gas station on Sunday night, according to police.

Jonathan Sanabria, 25, of Passaic, and Peter Sanders, Jr., 29, of Haledon, were arrested at about 11:13 p.m. on numerous weapons and drug charges, said police director Jerry Speziale.

Police officers Ryan Duffy and K. Calderon were on patrol of Market Street and Madison Avenue when they observed disturbance at the intersection gas station. The officers observed a worker at the gas station attempting to fight off Sanabria who walked in after hitting an attendant and began to destroy the store inside the gas station’s mini-mart, said the director.

Sanabria was acting erratic inside the mini-mart, but after seeing officers he quickly got out of the gas station and entered a vehicle occupied by Sanders, according to police.

Duffy tried to secure Sanabria when he spotted marijuana inside the vehicle. While attempting to seize the drugs, he spotted a handgun, according to police. The weapon and drugs were seized, said the director.

Both Sanabria and Sanders were arrested and charged, said the director.

“Alert police officers defused a dangerous situation and removed another weapon and drugs from our streets,” said Speziale.
