New York man guilty of assaulting Paterson woman with baseball bat

A Staten Island man has been found guilty of assaulting his former girlfriend with a wooden baseball bat, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.
David Correa, age unknown, was convicted of second-degree attempted kidnapping, aggravated assault, third-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of weapon for an unlawful purpose by a jury, authorities said Tuesday morning.
Correa assaulted his former girlfriend with a baseball bat and attempted to kidnap her from her Paterson home on July 8, 2013, authorities said. The former girlfriend testified Correa struck her on the head with a wooden baseball bat and dragged her to her car to force her inside as she was leaving her home for work.
The woman’s scream attracted the attention of her neighbors who came to her aid. Correa tried to suppress her cries for help by stuffing the wig she was wearing into her mouth.
Authorities said he fled the scene once neighbors came to her assistance. Police found a bloodied baseball bat, backpack containing Correa’s cellphone, and two sets of handcuffs, authorities said.
Correa could face a maximum of 10 years in prison, authorities said.
Authorities said his sentencing is scheduled for April 1, 2016 at 9 a.m. before New Jersey Superior Court Judge Scott Bennion at the Passaic County Courthouse.
