Police: Four arrested on drug charges in sweep

Four people were arrested on drug charges and large quantities of drugs were seized during the city’s weekly narcotics sweep, according to police.

Police seized 183 glassines of heroin, 3 baggies of marijuana and crack-cocaine each, 44 grams of powdered cocaine, and $2,215 in suspected drug proceeds from February 23rd to 29th, 2016, said police director Jerry Speziale.

Arrested on drug charges were city residents Dashaun C. McDaniel, 20, of East 23rd Street; Ruperto Ortiz, 23, of Market Street; Oliver R. Mendez, 36, of East 29th Street;

Police also arrested Bloomfield resident Austin Ocampo, 24.

McDaniel was arrested at 494 East 23rd Street on February 23rd, 2016, according to police. He allegedly had 46 glassines of heroin and 3 baggies of marijuana in his possession, said police.

$1,431 in suspected drug money was taken from McDaniel.

The same day police arrested Ortiz and Ocampo at 796 East 19th Street with 137 glassines of heroin and 3 baggies of crack-cocaine, according to police.

$185 was taken from Ortiz and $284 was taken from Ocampo in suspected drug money, said the director.

Mendez was arrested with 44 grams of powdered cocaine on Edward and East 43rd Streets on February 26th, 2016. He was also in possession of drug paraphernalia, according to police.

$315 in alleged drug money was seized from Mendez.

“Our efforts will intensify weekly to rid or city of illegal drugs,” said Speziale. “Those who choose to come from out of town to purchase narcotics will be arrested, lose their vehicles and face decisive justice.”
