A 28-year-old city woman who was near a violent assault that was taking place on Summer and Oak Streets suffered a gunshot wound to her back on Thursday night, according to police.

Police said the victim is in critical but stable condition. She was wounded at about 10:20 p.m. while at the intersection.

Police were responding to an assault in progress at the location. A man was found with head injuries and the woman was found with a gunshot wound to the back, according to police.

It is believed the assault victim was jumped by several individuals and that during the ensuing fight one of the combatant pulled out a handgun and fired striking the victim who was at the intersection, said police.

Police do not believe the 28-year-old woman was the intended target.
