The Main Line rail service was suspended in both directions between Paterson and Clifton on Sunday night after a train fatally struck a trespasser.

The victim, an adult male, was struck at the NJ Transit grade crossing east of 5th Avenue and Wait Street at about 9:50 p.m, said Jim Smith, spokesman for New Jersey Transit.

Smith said the identify of the victim is not being released until next of kin notification. Train 1735, the 9:15 p.m. departure from Hoboken heading to Suffern, NY for arrival at 10:24 p.m., struck the trespasser, he said.

Police closed off the road between 5th Avenue and River Street as investigators processed the scene.

Smith said none of the 58 customers and crew members were injured in the incident. He said transit police continue to investigate the fatality.
