A 17-year-old boy died on Wednesday night just hours after crashing his moped into a set of garbage cans on North 2nd Street and Haledon Avenue, said police director Jerry Speziale.

Speziale said the boy was not wearing a helmet. He also said the moped was unregistered and uninsured.

The boy lost control of the moped and crashed into the garbage cans at about 7 p.m. last night, said the director. He was rushed to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment. His condition was critical when he was brought into the hospital.

Speziale said the boy was in surgery, but at about 10:30 p.m. he was pronounced dead.

Police have not yet released the identity of the juvenile.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” said Speziale.
