A 4-year-old boy was killed on North 7th Street on Sunday afternoon after he ran into the road while playing outside with other children, according to police.
Police director Jerry Speziale said the boy — identified by the family as Avery LeBranch — was struck at 2:20 p.m. by a 67-year-old woman driving home from church.
Outside 20 North 7th Street, the boy was playing with other children, when few of them ran across the street, and the boy was struck.
The boy was rushed to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to injuries, said Speziale.
The elderly woman, visibly affected as a result of the accident, remained on the scene of the accident, said Speziale.
“Being a father, it’s unimaginable, the loss of a child,” said Speziale. “I pray for the family during this extremely difficult time.”
Speziale said the city’s traffic division and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the incident.
