After a homicide in the corner of Auburn and Hamilton Streets, police setup a surveillance operation that led to the arrest of an alleged drug dealer armed with a handgun on Thursday, said police director Jerry Speziale.

Dequanis Hughes, 19, of Prospect Park, was arrested with a loaded .380 caliber Jennings handgun, 1,107 glassines, and 48 vials of crack-cocaine, according to police.

Detective sergeant Rick LaTrecchia and detectives Bill Niebanck, Ed Herrmann and Anthony Castronova chased Hughes to the third floor of the apartment building at 50 Auburn Street before placing him under arrest.

“Once on the 3rd floor the suspect forced his way into an apartment and detectives followed in fresh pursuit where the suspect was arrested,” said Speziale.

Police said the surveillance operation was setup outside of the notorious housing complex after 57-year-old Marilyn Thompson was killed early Saturday morning.

“Violence will not be tolerated in our city and groups responsible will become the focus of our enforcement initiatives,” said Speziale.
