Paterson requiring liquor business owners to undergo annual training

The city council recently passed a measure requiring liquor business owners to undergo annual training to reduce the large number of liquor license violations being incurred by bars and liquor stores.
“This is really a good start to getting them to understand what it means to be the owner of a liquor store,” said Ruby Cotton, 4th Ward councilman, on Tuesday evening. She said too many liquor businesses are ignorant of various state rules regulating liquor licenses resulting in constant and repeat violations.
Business owners will not be able to renew their license without going through the annual Paterson Alcohol Beverage Education Seminar, according to the ordinance approved by the city council.
“Those folks who break the law will continue to do so just a little bit more carefully now,” remarked Kenneth Morris, councilman at-large.
The city’s Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Board has been forcing liquor license holders with violations to undergo training over the past seven months.
The city will schedule the annual seminars. Those who fail to attend will have to pay $250 to attend a make-up session. There will only be one make-up session per year, according to the ordinance.
