More than two dozen city residents were displaced on Thursday afternoon as a fire spread from a car to two structures on East 24th Street, according to fire officials.

Two homes – a 2.5-story and a 1.5-story – on East 24th Street were damaged in the fire that began at 2:45 p.m., said deputy fire chief Frank Calamita. He said 24 people were displaced as a result of the fire.

One firefighter and two civilians were taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries, said Calamita. He said the firefighter was treated and released from the hospital.

The driver of a sedan pulled into the driveway of 227 East 24th Street igniting 229 East 24th Street.

Calamita said 227 East 24th Street is uninhabitable and 229 East 24th Street sustained heavy damage to the attic. He said 227 East 24th Street also sustained a lot of smoke and water damage.

65 firefighters responded in the scorching heat to the scene and terminated the fire at 8 p.m., said the deputy chief.

“It was a very tough fire. A lot of heat issues, guys worked really hard,” said Calamita.

The displaced residents are being assisted by the American Red Cross, said officials.
