Paterson man, 18, shot in the leg fleeing group

An 18-year-old man suffered gunshot wound to the lower leg early Saturday morning when he attempted to flee a group of men on Hamilton Avenue, according to police.

Police said the victim was walking on Hamilton Avenue near Lake Street at about 12:15 a.m. when he encountered a group sparking an altercation. He attempted to flee the area on foot, but a member of the group pulled out a gun and fired shots.

The victim was struck in the lower leg, according to police. He ran away from the area and found assistance from residents sitting in front of a Lake Street home. The victim was located on Lake Street when police officers responded to the location, said police director Jerry Speziale.

Police said the victim was transported to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment.
