A 24-year-old city man was arrested after a chase through Westside Park on Saturday evening for firing shots at a moving vehicle on Paterson and Totowa Avenues, according to police.

Police said Arren Beal was standing at the intersection when the victim driving on Totowa Avenue attempted to make a turn onto Paterson Avenue. Beal fired numerous times at the victim, striking his vehicle several times, said police.

Officers Pedro Menacho, Shedy Omar, and Timothy Tabor obtained a description of the suspect and began to search for him. Beal was observed inside the baseball field in Westside Park. Officers closed in on Beal as he fled on foot from the shooting scene. He led officers on a foot pursuit along the riverbank within the park, according to police.

Police officers arrested Beal without an incident, said police director Jerry Speziale. A follow up investigation by detectives Todd Pearl and Bennie Ramos resulted in Beal being charged with aggregated assault and weapons offenses, said police.

Beal, who lives on Paterson Avenue, is being held on $75,000 bond without a 10-percent option, said the director.

Speziale said those who think they can evade police are mistaken. “We will pursue all violent criminals to no end until they face fierce and decisive justice,” said the director.

Paterson Avenue is a particularly unstable area in the city’s quiet 2nd Ward. On August 6th, 2016, a 20-year-old man was wounded at the same intersection at about 10:50 p.m, said police at the time.

Police continue to investigate the shooting incident. Anyone with information is being asked to contact detectives at 973-321-1120.
