A 22-year-old city man is in critical condition after suffering multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso on Oxford and North 8th Streets early Thursday morning, according to police.

Police responding to phone calls and alerts of gunfire at about 2:25 a.m. found the victim with gunshot wounds lying in the roadway.

“At this time it appears that the victim was in the area of the park at that location when some type of altercation ensued and shots were fired at that time,” said police director Jerry Speziale.

Police said the victim was taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment, said police. The victim is in critical condition, according to police.

“If this is group related we will deploy the focus deterrent team and they will completely disrupt and arrest any of the members of any group involved in criminal activity,” said Speziale.

Anyone with information is urged to contact detectives Francisco Brito and Michael Quinones of the Ceasefire Unit at 973-321-1342.
