An inspection of the city’s old police headquarters on Washington Street on Monday afternoon uncovered decomposed remains of a person, according to police.

Police said inspectors reported the discovery of the remains at about 5:15 p.m. Detectives visited the location at 111 Washington Street and determined the decomposed remains were within the structure, said police director Jerry Speziale.

Speziale said the medical examiner’s office was notified and removed the remains. The deceased has not been identified, he said.

Authorities continue to investigate the matter and have not released any other information.

The Washington Street police headquarter has been closed for 37 years, said the director. It closed in 1979 after a fire forced an evacuation of the building, he said.

Anyone with information is being urged to contact detectives Richard Martinez or Benny Ramos at 973-321-1120.
